Tomorrow is going to be a big day in American history. Every time a President nominates a new Supreme Court Justice it is big day, but President Trump’s pick has the potential to change the Court for our entire lives, and the lives of our children.
Everyone knows that this pick could overturn Roe v Wade, but what about other rights we take for granted? The right to remain silent? That’s Miranda v Arizona. The right to an attorney in a criminal case? Gideon v Wainwright. The right to free speech? Brandenburg v Ohio. All these rights are open to interpretation by the Court, and any, or all, of these cases could be overturned with one decision. Meaning that any fundamental right could be taken away if the Court decides to overrule a previous case. That is why, even if you are not an abortion rights advocate, you need to care who ends up sitting on the bench.
Even if our legislature cannot control who gets appointed to the court, they can control what rights we have. Just as they moved to protect net neutrality when that appeared under attack by the federal government, the legislature should move to protect our fundamental liberties by enshrining them in State Law. In Olympia I promise to defend all the rights that we have come to expect and will make sure that one Supreme Court pick cannot undo the protections that all Washingtonians rely upon.
